Résumé

Con 414 voci, questo lavoro presenta la versione più completa e aggiornata della bibliografia di Jean Gottmann (1915-1994), geografo francese e cosmopolita, noto per i suoi studi sulla Megalopoli del Nordest degli Stati Uniti e la geografia urbana. Negli anni Novanta, la riscoperta postuma dei suoi scritti di geografia politica e in particolare del suo concetto di iconografia ha aperto la strada a una rivalutazione del suo ruolo pionieristico per la geografia culturale e per la transizione dalla geografia regionale alla geografia delle reti. Questa bibliografia costituisce dunque una guida per la storia del pensiero geografico, indispensabile alla comprensione della genesi ed evoluzione della sua opera complessiva e, in generale, un invito a rileggere gli scritti di ciascun autore nel quadro della loro più ampia produzione scientifica oltre che, naturalmente, nel contesto scientifico e intellettuale del tempo.

Introduzione

1La letteratura geografica di Gottmann abbraccia oltre sessant'anni di attività - tra il 1933 e il 1994 - ed è composta da 412 titoli, pubblicati principalmente in francese e inglese. I suoi scritti sono stati tradotti in quattordici lingue, tra cui spagnolo, portoghese, italiano, tamil, olandese, turco, sloveno, giapponese, polacco, yiddish, tedesco e greco moderno, ma nessuno dei suoi 21 libri (comprese 13 monografie) scritti in francese o in inglese risulta essere stato tradotto nell'altra lingua principale. Questa dicotomia, così come la crescente specializzazione della geografia nel XX secolo, spiega in parte la ricezione frammentata della sua opera, che pure è stata riconosciuta aver contribuito alla geografia economica, politica, urbana, regionale e storica. Se tutte queste specializzazioni sub-disciplinari sono racchiuse nella sua visione olistica della geografia umana, tuttavia non la esauriscono: i suoi contributi pionieristici alla geografia culturale, allo studio delle diaspore e alla geografia delle telecomunicazioni non sono meno importanti.

2In termini di geografia regionale si possono identificare almeno quattro principali aree di specializzazione:

3a) Palestina/Israele, con aperture al Medio Oriente e al Mediterraneo, soprattutto nei primi decenni di attività;
b) Francia: dalla geografia rurale e agraria al commercio estero, alle materie prime, alla geografia coloniale, politica e urbana;
c) gli Stati Uniti, geografia economica, regionale, culturale e urbana (dagli anni '40);
d) Geografia economica, regionale, culturale, politica e urbana dell'Europa.

4Si potrebbero aggiungere anche alcune specializzazioni regionali minori: e) sulla geografia economica della Russia sovietica, principalmente negli anni '30; e f) studi geografici urbani su luoghi specifici a diverse scale come Oxford e il Giappone (dagli anni '70).
Tuttavia, se l’elenco dei suoi contributi sub-disciplinari consente di cogliere solo in superficie l'evoluzione del suo pensiero geografico, anche questa regionalizzazione dell’opera permette di cogliere solo in parte il fatto che, rispecchiando il cambiamento del secondo dopoguerra, con
Megalopolis la sua geografia si muove oltre la tradizione monografica regionale: le sue “catene di crocevia” aprono a una multi-scalare geografia delle reti.
Seguendo la lezione di Demangeon, la geografia umana di Gottmann è innanzitutto una geografia economica, che nell'evitare ogni rischio di determinismo ambientale, mira piuttosto a comprendere le dimensioni culturali e psicologiche delle comunità territoriali. Se la sua bibliografia mostra così l'evoluzione dei suoi interessi dalle regioni agricole e rurali verso la geografia urbana, il suo pionieristico approccio culturale include anche una dimensione politica. Essa è visibile non solo nel suo lavoro giovanile sulla Palestina (che risente dell’influenza sionista di Michael Berchin) o nella sua geografia della Francia, in particolare sulla geografia delle materie prime. Quest'ultima, infatti, avviene nel contesto del tardo tentativo dell'internazionalismo scientifico di prevenire la seconda guerra mondiale offrendo una soluzione alle pretese economiche dei poteri "non abbienti", incorporando così anche la dimensione geopolitica. Tale prima esposizione all'internazionalismo scientifico si rafforza durante la guerra all'Institute for Advanced Study di Princeton, con la sua esperienza alle Nazioni Unite (1946-47) e nella sua carriera internazionale, soprattutto dopo
Megalopolis, evidenziando una traiettoria intellettuale che, oltrepassando l'era di nazionalismi, muove verso una prospettiva pienamente internazionalista, incentrata sul ruolo della scienza e dell'istruzione.

5Se la guerra e le sue conseguenze accrescono il suo interesse per la geografia politica, ad essa sarebbero stati dedicati alcuni dei suoi libri (1952, 1973) e saggi più rilevanti. In particolare, la nozione di "iconografie regionali" Gottmann apre la strada al ruolo delle rappresentazioni nell'organizzazione umana del mondo, sostituendo all'approccio funzionalista fino ad allora dominante un approccio culturale, che si è affermato negli ultimi decenni. Come scrive Claval a questo autore: “Le iconografie gli hanno permesso di cogliere contemporaneamente ciò che simboleggia e struttura le regioni dei geografi di ieri e ne assicura la permanenza, e ciò che simboleggia e struttura il mondo globalizzato della seconda metà del XX secolo, di cui Megalopoli fornisce la prima grande interpretazione”. Così, la sua bibliografia permette di ricostruire un movimento interno alla sua geografia umana che muove dalla geografia economica a quella culturale, politica e infine urbana (senza tralasciare un focus sociale, comunitario, negli scritti sull’aménagement e una precoce attenzione per alcuni problemi ambientali). Già una semplice lettura dei titoli delle sue pubblicazioni rivela così la transizione da una geografia delle regioni a una geografia delle reti in una prospettiva di geografia culturale.

7Essa viene ristampata, con una sola aggiunta relativa al 1983, lo stesso anno in: The Coming of the Transactional City, stampato a College Park dall'Institute for Urban Studies dell'Università del Maryland. Una selezione dei suoi scritti di geografia urbana compresi tra il 1949 e il 1987 appare inoltre in Since Megalopolis, the Urban Writings of Jean Gottmann (1990a) curata da Gottmann con Robert Harper.

8Grazie all'apertura del fond Gottmann, donato alla Bibliothèque nationale de France, Département des cartes et plans dalla vedova Bernice Adelson Gottmann, è stato possibile verificare tutta la sua bibliografia sullo stesso taccuino dove Gottmann teneva nota delle proprie pubblicazioni. Questa informazione è stata confrontata con quella disponibile nell'Indice di quattro raccolte di saggi precedentemente pubblicati in diverse riviste: Etudes sur l'Etat d'Israël (1959b), Essais sur l'aménagement de l'espace habité (1966f), La città invincibile (1983f) e Since Megalopolis (1990a).

9La precedente versione di questa bibliografia apparsa su Cybergeo (L. Muscarà 1998) era stata riletta da Jean-Yves Sarazin (1967-2016), allora curatore del fond Gottmann e poi direttore del Département des cartes et plans alla BnF di Parigi (2010-2016). Con lievi modifiche essa appare a stampa in Ekistics (2003) e nella riedizione de La politique des États et leur géographie pubblicata dal CTHS (2007). La presente versione contiene quasi trenta nuove voci, inclusi alcuni scritti giovanili sulla Palestina. In essa è stato inoltre possibile controllare la quasi totalità delle voci sulle fonti originali, consentendo di integrare alcune lacune presenti nelle informazioni bibliografiche trasmesse dall’autore.
